Jeffery Clark Barnes, 68, long time Courtland Town Sergeant passed away June 24, 2012 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was the son of the late Bennie Clarence and Nita Woodard Barnes. Jeff was a public servant for 43 years serving at Suffolk Fire and Police Departments, Nansemond County Fire Department, Franklin Police Department, Southampton County Sheriff's Department and was the Town Sergeant in Courtland for 28 years. He was a member of Conway Baptist Church, Conway, NC and attended Courtland Baptist Church. Jeff was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence Barnes, Bennie E. Barnes and Bennie C. Barnes, Jr. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 49 years, Thelma Vann Barnes and two sisters, Ina Barnes Turner and Rachell W. Bolton, both of Suffolk. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Riverside Cemetery in Courtland with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the residence and suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
