More than anything Bennie loved his family. He was always dreaming about the next fish he would catch and was always giving his family, friends and neighbors plants and trees that he had raised. Bennie always had the gift of gab and never meet a stranger. He was an US Army Veteran. He retired from the Amoco Oil Refinery in Yorktown as an Operator after more than 30 years of service.
Bennie is survived by his wife, Thelma Everette Barnes of 57 years; four children, daughter, Brenda and son-in-law, Lendon Smith of New Orleans, La., sons, Bennie Barnes Jr. of York County and Kevin Barnes of Newport News, daughter, Lori and son-in-law, Chris Ashe of York County; three grandchildren, Christopher and Sierra Ashe and Brandon Barnes; brother of the late Clarence Barnes; Bennie C. Barnes Jr.; and brother-in law, Frank Giannasi.
He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ina and Billy Turner of Suffolk, Va., Rachel and Larry Bolton of Suffolk, Va.; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Thelma Barnes of Courtland, Va.; his sisters-in-law, Lori Barnes of Conway, Va.; and Mildred Giannasi of Richmond, Va., and nieces and nephews.
