Obituary for Mary Jane Valentine Metzger from the Circleville Union Herald of Thursday, October 18, 1906:

"MRS. METZGER DEAD. Succumbs to Attack of Peritonitis Following Appendicitis--Funeral Friday. Mrs. Mary J. Metzger, wife of Abraham Metzger, died yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at their home in Circleville Township, of peritonitis, following an attack of appendicitis. Her many friends in this city and in the community in which she lived will regret to learn of her death. A week ago last Friday, Mrs. Metzger was taken suddenly ill of appendicitis and last Saturday, as the last resort of saving her life, a slight operation was performed, but peritonitis had then developed and the skill of physicians and care of family and trained nurse could not stay the ravages of the disease. The funeral will be held from the family home at 1:30 o'clock, standard time, tomorrow afternoon, and interment will be made in Forest Cemetery. Rev. G. J. Troutman will conduct the service. Mrs. Metzger was born in Circleville Township, January 29, 1854, and was the daughter of Israel and Caroline Stout Valentine. November 6, 1883, she married Abraham Metzger, and two daughters were born of this union. July 16, 1871, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. E. L. Tressel. She was a model wife and mother, and the lives of many were full of sweetness, made so by her gentle, kindly nature. Of her immediate family, she leaves surviving her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Omer Kraft, of Circleville Township, and Miss Amy E. Metzger, and four step-children, George W. and Lawrence Metzger, of Circleville Township, Edward H. of Columbus, and Mrs. John Ucker, of Walnut Township; six brothers, William A. Valentine, George, James, Emanuel, Edward and Israael Valentine, and one sister, Miss Lizzie A. Valentine."
