Israel Valentine was born January 26, 1819, in Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, a son of John & Margaret Zieger Valentine. He was married to Caroline Catherine Stout on June 20, 1841, in Pickaway County. She was the daughter of John and Anna Engaline Myers Stout. They were the parents of eleven children: William Allen, Lydia Ann, Elizabeth Ann, John, George W. James Henry, Mary Jane, Emanuel, Sarah Etta, Edward and Israel, Jr. Israel passed away on November 18, 1903, in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio, and was buried on the 22nd in Forest Cemetery there.


From the History of Pickaway County, Ohio, page 571:

"...Israel Valentine, son of John and father of Edward, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, January 26, 1819. He remained at home with his father until the age of 22 years and then started out for himself, purchasing 83 acres in Circleville Township. In 1841 he married Caroline Stout, a daughter of John Stout, of Pennsylvania. Later Mr. Valentine added 86 acres and still later bought the old Stout farm of 200 acres in Washington Township. Other property that he subsequently bought consisted of the Market farm of 105 acres, in Circleville Township; the old Zearing farm of 80 acres, in Fairfield County and the old Tobey farm of 200 acres, in Washington Township. At one time he owned 760 acres of valuable land, the greater part of it being subsequently given to his sons. Israel Valentine died in November, 1903, his wife: having passed away in 1887. They had reared a family of 11 children, viz.: William, Lydia A., Lizzie, John, George, James, Mary, Emanuel, Sarah E., and Edward and Israel S. (twins)."

Obituary for Israel Valentine from the Circleville Union Herald of Thursday, November 19, 1903:

"Born in this County 84 Years Ago -- Funeral Sunday. Israel Valentine, one of the oldest residents of the county, died at his home, east of the city, yesterday afternoon at two o'clock. Mr. Valentine was born in this county, January 26, 1819. In 1841, he married Miss Caroline Stout of Washington Township, this county. Mrs. Valentine died August 11, 1887, aged 65 years. Deceased was the father of eleven children, eight of whom are living: Miss Lizzie Valentine, Mrs. David Metzger, William A., George, James, Emanuel, Israel and Edward Valentine. The funeral will be held from the Trinity Lutheran Church, of which he was a member, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. G. J. Troutman will officiate. Burial in Forest Cemetery."

"Funeral of Mr. Valentine. The funeral of Israel Valentine was held from Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday morning, Rev. G. J. Troutman conducting the service. Mr. Valentine had been identified with the Lutheran Church from boyhood and Rev. Mr. Troutman paid a tribute to his life as a church member, his text being 'I Have Fought a Good Fight, I have Finished My Course, I Have Kept the Faith.' The hymns were 'Abide With Me,' 'Now Lay Me Calmly in the Grave' and 'There is a Land of Fair Delight.' Many beautiful flowers surrounded the casket. Burial was in Forest Cemetery, the pallbearers being the six sons, Israel, Edward, William, James, Emanuel and George Valentine."
