R. Alan Ayars, 82, of Bridgeton died suddenly on Friday, April 27, 2012. Mr. Ayars was the husband of Claire R. Ayars (nee Kienzle).

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947, giving twenty years of service to the country he loved. He served aboard several ships and boats and at least three submarines. One of the submarines was a nuclear powered Polaris missile submarine, The USS Patrick Henry. He was assigned to the Mediterranean fleet.

After retiring from the US Navy he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Whitehall Laboratories (Wheth/Pfizer). He retired to a life of doing what he liked best; gardening, reading and following his political interests. He had also completed a vast amount of work in genealogy. Mr. Ayars was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he most recently became involved in activities as a member of the Amvets Post 911 and the United States Submarine Veterans. He was also a member of the Berean Baptist Temple in Bridgeton.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four children, Alan W. Ayars of Millville, Daniel K. Ayars (Jody) of Bailey, NC, Patty Ayars Ghedine (Raymond) of Charleston, SC and Richard M. Ayars (Joy) of Millvile. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Ayars was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth M. Ayars, Sr. and Ila Ayars (nee Kishpaugh) and his brother, Kenneth M. Ayars, Jr.

A private graveside service was held for family members at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. Memorial Fund, Egg Harbor Township Base, P.O. Box 558, Somers Point, NJ 08244. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the FREITAG FUNERAL HOME in Bridgeton.
