Mary Elizabeth Holtzapfel, 91, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at a local nursing home. She was born July 20, 1919, the daughter of the late Kathryne (Byrne) and James J. Mains. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Holtzapfel; a sister, Armella Mains; two brothers, James J. Mains, Jr. and Dan Mains; one granddaughter, Katy (Holtzapfel) Clark; and one grandson, Sam Schwed.

She is survived by a daughter, Maririta Bartee of Clarksville, Ind.; a son and daughter-in-law, George Albert and Mary Jon Holtzapfel of Ironton; six grandchildren, Kathy (Joe) Martin, Terri Baker and significant other Steve Sumner, Alicia (Jack) Meck, Christopher (Sherri) Holtzapfel, Eileen (Scott) Wilds, and Loretta (Eric) Tackett; and one sister-in-law, Sue Mains. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School with the class of 1937, and a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton, where she had been a member of the Christian Mothers' Club and Catholic Women's Club. She was a housewife, and had also been a cook for the St. Joseph rectory and the concession stand for the Ironton Municipal Pool.

O'Keefe-Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Father David Huffman and Father Tim Kozak concelebrating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral. Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ironton Catholic Schools, or Community Hospice of Ashland, Ky.


Known as "Mary Liz" to friends, and "Grandmother" to grandchildren.
