J.J. Mains Dies; Rites Scheduled Friday A.M.

A well-known Ironton resident, James J. (Korb) Mains, 71, of 2837 S. 3rd St. died at 2:30 a.m. today in the Holtzer Hospital, Gallipolis, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks.

"Korb", as he was known to his many friends here, retired from the Semet-Solvay Plant, in Ironton, four years ago after thirty-eight years of service. He was an ardent sports fan and was a familiar figure at local sports events.

Mr. Mains was born January 19, 2893 in Ironton, only child of the late Spicer and Ina Beam Mains. All of his life was spent in Ironton. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Holy Name of the church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, United Commercial Travelers, Council 176 and Modern Woodmen of America.

On August 9, 1916, he was united in marriage to Kathryne E Byrne. The couple resided all of their married life in the south side of the city.

Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Kathryne E. Mains, three children, James J. Mains, Jr., of Ironton, guidance director at Ironton High School; Mrs. George A. (Mary Elizabeth) Holtzapfel, of Ironton; and Daniel R. Mains, of Ironton, employee at Dayton Malleable Iron Co.; 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A daughter, Armelia Mains, preceded him in death. Mr. Mains was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Requiem Mass will be solemnized Friday at 10 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Father John Quinn officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the O'Keefe Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rosary will be recited there Thursday at 7 p.m.

For years I have tried to find out where Corb's (Korb) nickname came from. His son Daniel's birth certificate was incorrect listing Corbet as his name. Daniel use to have to carry around an affidavit of his correct name. I found that Corb's grandfather had a cousin, Corbley Fordice Main, and my Dad actually has a few DNA matches with Corbley's decendants, although very little shared.
