Marie D. Schell was born on May 17, 1923, on a homestead in Grant County, S.D., to Charles and Martha Fike, one of 12 children. She passed away peacefully on Jan. 19, 2008, surrounded by her family.
Marie married her life partner, Christ Schell, on Dec. 24, 1934, in Macintosh, S.D. They settled in Billings, where they raised their four children in the house they lovingly built together.
Marie was a hard worker. She had several jobs throughout her life, with the most recent being at K-Mart Foods. However, her major focus was her family and her home.
Marie loved to live life to the fullest. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing (especially the polka), cooking, baking, crocheting, sewing and decorating their home. Playing the mouth organ and yodeling were two of her many talents.
All who had the pleasure of knowing Marie agree that she was very generous and most caring. Everyone was always welcomed into their home. No one ever left as a stranger or hungry. It was amazing how she could make a "meal out of nothing." You could always count on leaving with a pie, some cinnamon rolls, a jar of her homemade pickles or even some deer sausage she and Christ had made.
Christ left this world on April 28, 2007. Marie looked forward to reuniting with him and having their first date all over again!
Marie was also preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and an infant grandson. She is survived by her sons, Jimmie (Carol) and Vic (Becky); her daughters, Diana Abell (Jesse) and Cindy Hoff (Howard), all of Billings; sisters Margie, California, Ollie, South Dakota, Ruth, California, Grace, South Dakota; brothers Neil, Washington, and Fred, Montana; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with two more "on the way."
The family would like to thank Dr. David Christianson, Dr. Abdul Kadri and the nursing staff for the excellent, compassionate care given to Marie.
Services will be held at Smith's Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
