Christ D. Schell passed away peacefully on April 28, 2007, surrounded by his wife and children, after a courageous battle with cancer. Christ was born on March 26, 1924, on a homestead in Pretty Rock Township, Grant County, N.D., to Phillip and Elizabeth Schell. He was the youngest of seven children. He attended school at Pretty Rock School.
Christ and his sweetheart, Marie Fike, eloped to McIntosh, S.D., on Christmas Eve, 1943. After living in South Dakota and Idaho, they finally settled in Billings in 1954, where they built their family home and raised their four children.
Christ was a very kind, gentle, hardworking man. He was always eager to share his hospitality and wit with anyone who came into their home. Christ enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and hunting. He loved to take Marie dancing and he was a very accomplished musician. He was also a good bowler. His team took 1st place in the State Bowling Tournament in l969 for Jubilee Lanes. Christ was a member of Operating Engineers, Local 400, and retired from Long Construction in 1986.
Christ is survived by Marie, his wife of 63 years; his brother, Philip; sons Jimmie (Carol) and Victor (Becky); and daughters Diana (Jesse) Abell and Cindy (Howard) Hoff. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bill, Johnny and Freddy, by his sisters, Lizzie and Susie, and one grandson, Kenneth Joel Abell.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Smith's Downtown Chapel, located at 925 S. 27th St. Visitation will begin Tuesday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at Smith's Downtown Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
