October 1869
John Chenoweth of Lisbon, Ohio, aged 52 yrs 1 mo 18 ds, died by suicide after cutting his own throat with a jack knife in his room at the Exchange Hotel in Columbus, Ohio late Sunday night, Oct 3, 1869. He arrived in Columbus on his way home from a pleasure and business trip in which he spent several weeks traveling to Niagara, New York and other points east. He stopped to visit his personal friend there, W F Herbert, who later stated to investigators that he was very concerned at John's highly unusual mental state, in which he appeared to be overly anxious and nervous, hysterically telling him he was being followed by three men from Rochester who were going to rob and kill him. Mr. Herbert saw no evidence that this was true and tried to calm him. John retired to his room at about 10 pm and when Mr. Herbert could not rouse him by the next afternoon he suspicioned something was very wrong and entered the locked room through an outside window where he sadly found John Chenoweth lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Authorities concluded that he apparently had gone insane, causing such a distressing mental unbalance that it drove him to take his own life.
