Eleanor Chenoweth Smith, aged 60 Yrs 7 Mos 3 Ds, died at her home on October 20, 1878. She was the wife of George G. Smith, to whom she was united in marriage on Feb 27, 1842 in Clark County, Ohio. Eleanor lived her entire life in Harmony Township, where she was born Mar 17, 1818, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Watson Chenoweth, early pioneers of Clark county. Her parents came to Harmony Township from Berkeley County Virginia, now West Virginia, in about 1803, when the area was young and wild. In October 1815, Thomas Chenoweth, along with Ebenezer Pottocks, utilized part of his land to lay out the village that was named Lisbon. It was divided into 56 lots, complete with a Main St. It was hoped that the village would grow and prosper, and it did at first, attracting the usual shops and community places such as a school and church. But the village started to slowly decline in population. Businesses that had started moved to the larger more populated towns and after a while, Lisbon became a quiet small, rural residential village that it remains to this day.
