Newton Preston Irwin was a son of Oscar Drunery Irwin and Minerva Jane Stevenson. His family affectionately called him Newt. He was married 3 November 1920 to Bessie Mae McGrew, and they had one child, Betty Jane.

Newton volunteered for service from Salisbury, IL on 1 August 1918. He trained at Camp Taylor, KY and served as a Private in Light Artillery, Third Battery, F.A.R.R. Newt sailed overseas on 27 October 1918 on the Montegami and received further training at Camp DeSouge, France. He was stationed in Liverpool, England when the Armistice was signed and was discharged 30 May 1919 at Camp Grant, IL.
