David Arthur Irwin was a son of Oscar Drunery Irwin and Minerva Jane Stevenson. He was affectionately called "Art" by his family. He worked as a motorman for a Peoria, IL streetcar until he became too ill to go to work. He suffered from gall stones and was operated on three or four times because of them. He later worked as a bartender at Brady's saloon in Peoria until he was brought home for his last operation, when he died.

David Arthur Irwin married Margaret "Maggie" Bailey on 1 Mar 1899 in Sangamon Co., IL. Their only son, David Foster Irwin, died in 1932.
