John Benway is Slain Instantly by Freight Train
Automobile is Entirely Demolished
Jon M. Benway, 72, Crescent City carpenter, was instantly killed this morning when his automobile was struck by a west-bound T. P. & W. freight train at a crossing in Crescent City.
He was dead when help reached him, having been thrown clear of the wreckage of his car. Preliminary examination of the body revealed a fractured skull, broken right arm and left leg and broken neck.
Eyewitnesses to the tragedy seemed to believe that Benway did not see the approaching train, and drove onto the crossing. The impact hurled the car, a 1925 Essex sedan, into a light pole on the right-of way scattering parts of the machine and fragments of some planking being carried along side of the tracks.
The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock.
Coroner Verne Bussert of Shelden was called to the scene at one and after examination of the body, set the inquest for 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.
Mr. Benway is survived by his wife. A daughter, Gladys, is a teacher, and a son Frank, formerly a Watseka merchant, operates a grocery store in Crescent City.

Funeral services for John Benway, 66, Crescent City carpenter who was killed Tuesday morning by a freight train at a crossing in the village, will be held tomorrow afternoon.
Rites will be held at the Crescent City Methodist church at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Preston Horst officiating. Burial, in charge of Segur Bros., will be in Flesher cemetery.
Mr. Benway was born Dec. 22, 1872 at Des Moines, Ia., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Benway. He spent his early life in Chatsworth and Sibley and attended public schools there. He married Carrie Gettler and to this union was born two children, Frank and Gladys, both of Crescent City. He moved to Iroquois county and Crescent City in 1922.
His wife and two children survive him.
A coroner's jury this morning returned a verdict that Benway's death was from skull fracture, shock and other injuries, resulting from being struck by a T.P. & W. freight train, number 21, at Grant Street crossing in Crescent City.
Benway had just left the Alexander Lumber Co. yard and was headed south across the tracks when the tragedy occurred.
The inquest was held at 10o'clock at the City Hall in Crescent City. On the jury were R. H. Hotaling, Frank Mathewson, F.C. Campbell, W. E. Albrecht, G.S. Bruniga and R. F. Bruniga.
