Joseph Liter was born on 7/8/1872 in a small home on Elm Street in Oshkosh WI. He was the son of Peter Leuter and Anna Marie Klein. He was the second surviving child of nine children and his siblings were Christina Liter Gilles (1869-1897), an Unnamed Infant (1871-1871), Margaretha Liter Krings (1875-1912), John (1878-1878), Peter (1880-1880), Mary (1881-1885), Jacob (1882-1882), and Steffon (1884-1885).
Joseph spent his childhood in Oshkosh and moved to the Plum City area around 1885. He was a career farmer for a large portion of his adulthood and in later years, worked as a foreman in road construction around Pierce, Dunn, St. Croix, and Pepin Counties.
on 6/1/1897, Joseph was united in marriage to Mary Ann Steffes at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plum City, WI. During their marriage, Joe and Mary had 14 children, George (1898-1898), Peter Paul "Pete" (1899-1973), John "Johnnie" (1900-1901), Twins: Anna Marie "Annie" Liter Gunderson (1903-1994) and William John "Bill" (1903-1988), Anton "Tony" (1905-1977), Twins: Matthew "Matt" (1906-1906) and Frances Katherine Liter DeLong (1906-1959), a Baby Girl (1907-1907), Henry (1909-1909), Margaret Kathryn Liter DeLong (1911-1994), Leonard (1913-1976), Thomas Peter "Tom" Liter (1915-1938), and Helen Liter Wood (1920-2011).
Following the death of his wife Mary in 1938, Joe lived for a time with his niece, Julia Bechel, before living both with his Daughter Helen and her family for a time and then lived with his daughter Margaret and her family until his death. Joe is remembered as a woodworker who's creations were masterful.
