William Canan Phipps, oldest son of Robert and Ann Canan Phipps, died at his home near Clintonville on Saturday morning, June 6th. Born in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, October 22, 1834, therefore in 57th year. On the 18th of November 1858, he married Miss Eiltzabth Douds of Crwawford County, who survives him along with five sons and two daughters...Presbyterian church of Clintonville. Veteran of the War of the Rebellion, having an honorable record of service. Enlisted on Company E, 16th Pa Cavalry, September 9, 1862 and served as a Corporal until Lee's surrender at Appomattox April 9, 1865. Funeral in Clintonville, largely attended, under the direction of John M. Phipps Post No 427 G.A.R. of which he had served as Commander for three terms. Interment in Calvert Cemetery, burial place of Phipps family for over 50 years.
