Crestmont Road Couple Feted by Friends, Descendants
This is a thankful Thanksgiving season for Mr. and Mrs. John Smith of 80 Crestmont road for today they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren and friends, and they have found life together a long and happy one.

This morning the postman brought a bundle of congratulations that filled a basket. And this afternoon there was a golden wedding feast attended by 24 guests with an immense cake, the gift of their nephew, Harold Diamond, of Oneonta.

Fifty years ago today Mr. and Mrs. Smith drove from their homes in Campbell to Corning for the marriage ceremony. They made the journey of eight miles in four-and-a-half hours in a rented hack. Steam rose from the plodding horses and the mud in the road was up to the axle.

The driver and the young couple frantically urged the horses on through the mud, for they were to reach Corning before noon or there would be no wedding—the priest had made a ruling only the previous week that he would perform no ceremonies after that time of day.

It was 10 minutes after 12 when the hack drove up to the priest's door. Time never seemed so important. But the Rev. Father Colligan was kind of heart and the wedding went on as scheduled. All this and other happy times were laughingly recalled by the Smiths today as they received their guests. Born in Campbell, they came to Binghamton the second day after the wedding. They have lived here ever since.

Guests at the dinner today were Mrs. H. E. Joint and Mr. and Mrs. John Moor of Savona, Mrs. Nell McCabe and Mrs. Mayme Coveny and son Robert of Elmira, Mrs. Catherine Diamond, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Diamond, Harold Diamond and William Gleason, all of Oneonta, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Talbott, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Drasher, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wilcox, Jane Wilcox, Marguerite Smith, George Smith and Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Gray, all of Binghamton.
