Rites Are Held Today For Former Pennsylvania Democratic Chairman
Funeral Services for John R. Collins, former Coudersport resident and at one time Democratic state chairman of Pennsylvania, were conducted the morning (February 8, 1950) at the Heenan Funeral Home, Olean, at ten o’clock.
Burial was in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, where the Rev. Robert L. Buchhelt, assistant pastor of St. Mary of the Angles Church, Olean, conducted committal services.
Mr. Collins died Monday (February 6, 1950) at his home in Glen Cove, L.I. after a brief illness. He moved to Glen Cove from Coudersport about six months ago.
Funeral Services were conducted Tuesday morning (February 7, 1950) at St. Patrick’s Church, Glen Cove, and the body was sent to Olean for burial.
Mr. Collins was born in Campbell, N.Y., eighty years ago, and lived most of his life in Coudersport. He was prominent in the lumber business around Austin, Pa., and at his retirement 20 years ago was superintendent of the Goodyear lumber firm in Austin.
He became interested in politics in the late 1920's, and served as Democratic state chairman of Pennsylvania from 1928 to 1932.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Kathryn Sculley Collins; a brother, Daniel Collins, 95, of Austin; and two sisters, Mrs. Delia Joint of Savona, and Mrs. Catherine Diamond of Oneonta, N.Y.
