Dinner Honors Daniel Collins

Savona—-Postmaster and Mrs. John Moore entertained with a dinner party at their home on Church St. last Saturday afternoon honoring Daniel Collins of Austin, Pa., who celebrated his 92nd birthday on Wednesday.

The Misses Mabel and Esther Collins and John Collins, daughters and son of the honored guest, were present. They are also from Austin. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. John R. Collins and Mrs. Mary Coveney of Elmira, Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley, O.H. Lay, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Joint and son, John, of Savona.

Death Claims Daniel Collins Aged Austinite -- Born at Campbell, N.Y. But Most of Life Spent in Austin -- Associated with Goodyear Lumber Company -- Retired More Than 30 Years.

Daniel Collins, Austin's oldest resident, and one of the oldest men in Potter County, ill two months, died Thursday (Feb. 7, 1952).

Mr. Collins was born in Campbell, N.Y., Oct. 31, 1854. He was the son of John and Catharine Cusick Collins. He married Mary Stenson at Campbell, but spent most of his life at Austin.
He located at the hustling lumber town in 1885. He was associated with F.H. and C.W. Goodyear of Buffalo in lumbering operations at Austin, Medix Run, Cross Fork and Norwich. He retired from active business 32 years ago.

He was for a long time a director of the Buffalo & Susquehanna R.R., was a member of the Austin School Board and a stock owner of the First National Bank of Austin. He was always interested in everything that had to do with progress in that town.

Mrs. Collins died May 3, 1914. Survivors are Dr. George R. Collins, Avon, N.Y.; Clarence S. Collins, Williamsport; John W., Mabel G. and M. Esther Collins, Austin. There are 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Two sisters, still living, are Mrs. Delia Joint, Savona, N.Y., and Mrs. Catherine Diamond of Oneonta, N.Y.

The body was prepared for burial at the Grabe Funeral Home and Requiem Mass was sung at St. Augustine's Church, Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock. Father Francis M. O'Connell of Coudersport, and Father Buchna, formerly of Austin, assisted Father J. Edward Feeney in the mass. Burial was in St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery at Allegany, N.Y. Pallbearers were John R. Collins II, Charles D. Collins, Paul L. Collins, Duane C. Westfall, Fred J. Cooper and Ralph W. Hernquist.

D. S. Collins, 97, Dies at Austin

Daniel S. Collins, Austin, 97 years old, died at his home Thursday, Feb. 7, 1952.

Mr. Collins, the oldest resident of Austin and one of the first settlers, was long connected with the lumbering interests in Potter County and surrounding area.

His brother, John R. Collins former Democratic state chairman of Pennsylvania, died in 1950.

Mr. Collins is survived by the following sons and daughters, Miss Mabel Collins, Miss Esther Collins, and John Collins of Austin; Dr. George R. Collins, of Avon, N.Y., and Clarence Collins of this city. There are also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Daniel Collins and Miss Mary Stenson were married Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the Roman Catholic church by Father Baxter, of Bath.

Mr. Collins is a favorite with all, and a large company was present at the wedding who wished them joy in their new life.
