****************
Sister Mary Mechtilde, a member of the Sisters of Charity and a graduate nurse and graduate pharmacist, at St. Mary's Hospital for 50 years, died at that institution yesterday at the age of 83. Her death brought a halt to the wind-up of a golden jubilee celebration which marked the 50th anniversary not only of the Nursing Home of the hospital but of her own graduation as a nurse there.
Born Hannah Kaney at Sandusky, Wisconsin, Sister Mary Mechtilde was one of four sisters who entered religious life. One survives, Sister Mary Wilfred, now a patient at St. Mary's Hospital. Sister Mary Wilfred for a number of years was pharmacist of Mount St. Vincent-on-the-Hudson. The only other surviving member of the family is a brother, Joseph Kaney of Sandusky.
The Nursing Home anniversary program began with this year's graduation Monday night. The 33 nurses who received their diplomas then, as well as hundreds of older alumnae will attend a requiem mass for Sister Mary Mechtilde in the hospital chapel at 9:30am tomorrow. The choir of Mount St. Vincent will sing. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
