There are several newspaper articles from February 1874 related to the John Croal rampage and attempted killing of his nephew James Kaney.

James Francis Kaney, the oldest son of Patrick and Rose Kaney, pioneer settlers of the town of Bear Creek, was born at Whitewater in July, 1854, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Adams, at Ableman, on January 5th, 1935. When a small boy, his family moved to Bear Creek and established a home in the wilderness. At that time bears were numerous and it was his delight to tell about them. When a young man, he married Mary Ann Byrne, a daughter of the late Patrick Byrne of Lone Rock, and they took up a claim at Kimball, South Dakota, in 1883, and homesteaded there for twenty years. In 1895, he returned to Bear Creek with his family and resided there and at Reedsburg until his death. Fifteen children were born to this union, three having preceded him in death. They are John and Will of Reedsburg, Mrs. Mary Adams and Emmett of Ableman, Mrs. Florence Johnson, Barron; Mrs. Katherine Peterson, Mrs. Anna Bollweg, Chicago; Mrs. Nellie Nieman and Albert, Plain; Wilfred and Hubert, Reedsburg, and Mrs. Lucile Schultz of California. His is also survived by his aged wife, two brothers, John of Milwaukee and Joseph of Richland Center and four sisters of the Order of Saint Vincent on the Hudson, New York City. His funeral took place at Loreto January 8th, 1935, Rev. Kaiser officiating, and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Loreto Catholic cemetery.
