Edith (Martin) Ball, 97, of Marblehead, died Nov. 17 at the Lafayette Convalescent Home. She was the wife of the late Dr. William B. Ball.
Born in Marblehead, she was the daughter of the late Knott and Celia (Titus) Martin.
Mrs. Ball graduated from Marblehead High School in 1921, and she was the last survivor of her class. She then went on to graduate form Salem Normal School, class of 1923. After graduation, Edith moved to Greenwich, which was one of the four towns flooded in order to make the Quabbin Reservoir. There she taught in a one-room schoolhouse for three years.
She then moved back to Marblehead and taught first grade at the Gerry School until her marriage in 1929.
Active within her community, Mrs. Ball was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead and of the New Dorcas Society. She was also a member of the American Red Cross, where she volunteered as a nurse's aide; the Marblehead Female Humane Society, the Marblehead-Swampscott Visiting Nurse Association, the Marblehead Historical Society, the OKOs Auxiliary and the Old Timers Society in Marblehead.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia B. Wright of Marblehead; two sisters, Louise G. Cutler and Elizabeth H. Ball, both of Marblehead; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her stepson, William B. Ball, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 26 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend.
Interment will not occur at this time as Mrs. Ball has requested she be an anatomical gift to the Tufts University School of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Ball's memory may be made to the Unitarian Univeralist Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead, MA 01945 or to the Lafayette Convalescent Home, 25 Lafayette St., Marblehead, MA 01945.
