James was the 4th child of 7 born to Margaret "Maggie" (O'brien) and Patrick Lavelle.

He was born in Pa and came with his family by railroad to Billings (1882) and in 1885 to Stillwater (later named Columbus).
The family built and operated the Hotel Lavelle for the next 15 years. James, his Dad and his brother Ambrose also ran cattle in Carbon Co. James never married and has no known children.
In later years he relocated to Calif and died there.
