Patrick was one of two children born to Mary (Hunt) and Anthony Lavelle. He was joined by a sister Mary Ellen. His mom died shortly after his sister's birth followed by his dad (1844) in Buffalo, N.Y., when Pat was 5. He and Mary went to live with his aunt and uncle(Peter and Mary Lavelle) in New York and he lived there until 1861. He served in the Civil War with the N.Y. 28th Infantry until 1865.

He then moved to Titusville, Pa. where he met and married Margaret (O'Brien) in 1866. In Titusville, they had 7 children:

Pat took a job in 1882 with the new Northern Pacific Railroad. The family moved to Billings, Mt. In 1886 they moved to Stillwater(later changed to Columbus). He bought land and built the Hotel Lavelle which the family ran for 15 years. He donated and helped fund much of early Columbus and became the first Mayor in 1907.
