Lloyd was the son of James Thomas Patterson, also known as Samuel Mellinger and Martha "Mattie" Butcher. He was the second child of 13 children. He married Susanna Diller on May 7, 1921 in Crawfordsville, Washington Co., Iowa. They are the parents of Virginia, Marvoleen, Ronald, Joyce and Jerome. John was a veteran of WWII and was employed with the Burlington Northern Railroad for 58 Years.
