She was the youngest daughter of James and Mattie (Butcher) Patterson. She grew up in a large family 1910 census:

On Sept. 3, 1924 Pearl married to Carl Nicholson in Riverside-West Chester, Washington county, and lived with his family and siblings.
Their son Thomas James was born Jan. 17, 1925. By 1930 the little family is on it's own. Their daughter Shirley Ann is born about 1937. By 1940 they live in Mount Pleasant, IA. and Carl is a garage mechanic.
Their son Thomas James served during WWII.
