Martha "Mattie" is the daughter of John Butcher and Lavina "Liza" Blake.

Siblings include John Jr., Leander (Lee), Rebecca Jane, Mary Louisa, Amanda, Ada A. and Emma (Emmerillis) and one unknown child.

She married James Thomas Patterson, also known as "Samuel Mellinger" on Dec 10, 1889 in Muscatine, Muscatine Co., Iowa. They had 13 children with two sets of twins eleven months apart: Johnny, Lloyd,Jay,Mae,Lula,Lewis,Frank, Clara, James, Earl, Pearl,Raymond, and Clarence.

She lived in Crawfordsville, Iowa and later lived and died at Shelton Nursing Home in New London, Henry Co.Iowa. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a pioneer in her own right.

I have only one very special memory of her. Visiting her in the nursing home across the railroad tracks in New London. I was 4yrs. old and can still remember it to this day so clearly. She had lipstick and rouge on and I still remember her room as we walked in. She gave me some sort of little jewelry but cannot remember the pieces. This is my only memory of her. I am blessed!

She is noted on the 1870 and 1880 census as "Cora". This must have been another nickname she had.
