Juan María Alejandro Lugo y Martínez was born at Monterey, Alta California, Nueva España (New Spain) and was baptized at the Monterey Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) June 11, 1780 (SC Baptism 00622). He was the son of soldado Francisco Salvador Lugo y Espinosa and Juana María Rita Martínez y Villanasul. He enlisted as a soldado de cuera and was posted to Mission San Gabriel, where he married María Paula Rubio y Domínguez on February 3, 1799 (SG Marriage 00652). He was buried in the San Buenaventura Mission Cemetery January 4, 1830 (SBV Death 03002).
