Rivera Expedition of 1774

Juana María Rita (Martínez y) Villanasúl (also: Vianazúl, Villanazúl) was the daughter of José María Martínez and María Josefa Villanasúl.* She married soldado Francisco Salvador Lugo y Espinosa (1740-1805) in Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, about 1759. She accompanied her husband to Baja California, where three of their children were born. She came to Alta California with her family as part of the Rivera Expedition of 1774. After retiring from military service, Francisco acquired a Spanish royal concession to a plot of land outside Los Angeles in 1789 and was building them a house there when Juana died at Santa Bárbara. She was buried in the Presidio Chapel March 24, 1790 ("Yglesia del Real Presidio" BP Death 00018).

* She is seldom found under her father's patronym Martínez. See: Northrop, Vol I, pg 219, for Juana's parentage; and Harry Crosby, Antigua California, pg 418, for use of the patronym Martínez (Mission San Ignacio baptism 02349).
