Soldado José Antonio Lugo y Martínez was only one year old when he accompanied his parents north with Captain Rivera y Moncada in September 1774. Like his father, he enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leather-jacket). He married María Josefa Antonia Verdugo y López at Mission San Gabriel January 8, 1795. He died at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, Nueva España (New Spain), and was buried in the Presidio Cemetery January 7, 1801 ("Cementerio del Real Presidio" BP Death 00078). His widow later married Pedro Antonio Féliz at Mission San Fernando July 2, 1823.
