Norbert V. Gerling, 96, of Henley, Missouri, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at his farm along the Osage River near Henley, Missouri. He was born May 26, 1919, in St. Thomas, Missouri, the son of the late Henry and Anna (Rackers) Gerling. On February 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth R. (Kempker) Gerling who preceded him in death on May 2, 1988. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, Mo. Norbert was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He served as a tank gunner in the 609th Tank Destroyer BN, 3rd US Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded three bronze stars. Upon returning from service he married his sweetheart and farmed his entire life. He enjoyed baseball and played for several local teams around St. Thomas and in the military. He truly enjoyed fishing, gardening and passing on his vast wealth of rural knowledge to friends and family. He continued to cut his own firewood and planted his gardens through 2015. In January 2015, Governor Nixon presented Norbert with the French "Legion of Honor" medal for his involvement in the liberation of France.

Survivors include: son, Bob Gerling (Joyce) of Henley, Mo.; daughters, Elaine Lackman (Ben) of Centertown, Mo., Mary Ann Bax of Jefferson City, Mo., Donna Junkans (Paul) of Henley, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by five sisters, Rose Morff, Sarah Nilges, Martha Sallin, Mary Maynard and Tillie Gerling, and one brother, Hubert Gerling. Visitation will be Friday, February 5, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, Mo. with a Rosary prayed at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. also at the church with Father Jeremy A. Secrist officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Snows Cemetery with Full Military Honors provided by the Eldon VFW Post #2442 of Eldon, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name are suggested to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church or Visions of Faith Window Restoration Project at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish C/O Fr. Jeremy Secrist St. Thomas the Apostle Parish P.O. Box 146 St. Thomas, MO 65076. Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon, Mo.
