She was born December 30, 1909, in St. Thomas, Missouri, a daughter of Henry and Anna Rackers Gerling. In the 1930's, she moved to Detroit, Michigan. She worked as a waitress and married fireman Leo J Dorrington at Saint Anthony Shrine in Redford, Michigan on August 18, 1934. The marriage ended in divorce on June 5, 1950. Tillie resumed use of her maiden name and moved back to Missouri.
Survivors include brothers: Hubert Gerling, Mexico, Missouri and Norbert Gerling, Henley, Missouri; and sisters: Martha Sallin, Westphalia, Missouri, and Mary Maynard, Jefferson City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, and sister Sarah Nilges.
