Belva was the daughter of William Sullivan (MO) and Etta Caroline Braswell (KY). She was the eldest of 10 children, only six surviving to adulthood: Belva T, William V Jr, twins Dewey T and Lewey J, Jeremiah G. "Jerry", and Hadley H.

She was married several times throughout her life, and had two children Virginal J. and James E. with her second husband James Edward Gregg of Paris, Kentucky.

During her life Belva was a nurse and was very active in the church. She was a granddaughter of Reverend Thomas L Braswell. She lived in SE, Missouri (Wayne, Carter, Iron and St Francois counties); Fort Benton, Havre, Butte and Helena, Montana; both Point Barrow and Ketchikan, Alaska; and Los Angeles, California where she passed away in 1975.
