Virginia Jaunita Gregg was born Sep 6, 1919 in Point Barrow, Alaska. Her parents were James Edward Gregg and Belva Thelma Sullivan. Point Barrow, Alaska is located on the northern most reaches of the State of Alaska. Belva and James Edward Gregg were enroute to Point Barrow in the service of the Government, when the vessel, US Revenue Cutter Bear, became lodged in ice about twenty miles off shore. Ironically, the Cutter Bear was an ice cutter operating in the waters at the time. In order to give birth, skin boats were fashioned and they made their way across the ice to Point Barrow where Virginia was born in the home of Charles (Charlie) Brower. She was officially, the first white child born at the top of the world. At that time, Point Barrow had only been settled by native Alaskan Indians. Virginia was a beautiful woman and upon her death in 1953, she left behind two young children, Sharon Hope Lowney and her brother, Walter Gregg Lowney.
