William Arthur Matthews was born in Redan, Ga., on Oct. 31, 1911, the fifth son of Arthur Lawrence Matthews and Annie Parks Bond Matthews. He received his primary and secondary education from schools in Decatur, Ga., Orlando, Fla., and Emory Academy at oxford., Ga. His college education was obtained at Emory University, and he earned his M.D. degree, which was awarded in 1944, at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He was married to the former Beverly Cone of Decatur, Ga., in the late 1930s.

After serving a term in the Army in Italy, Dr. Matthews set up in general practice, first in Highlands, N.C., and later in Brookhaven, Ga., In the 1950s he received a fellowship from the American Cancer Society to study radiology at the Steiner Clinic in Atlanta. In 1956 he and his family moved to Rock Hill, S.C., where he took up the practice of radiology. In 1965 he moved to Cullowhee, N.C., and became the radiologist at the C. J. Harris Community Hospital at Sylva, the Angel Community Hospital at Franklin, and the Swain County Hospital, at Bryson City, all in North Carolina. He died March 28, 1972 at the Sylva hospital of an apparent stroke and was buried in Highlands, N.C.

Dr. Matthews was one of four doctors in his immediate family. He was a man of many talents. His compassionate nature endeared him to his patients. He was a promoter of good causes, being instrumental in the building of a hospital in Highlands, N.C. One of his special projects was the Wildcat Ridge development and country club between Cashiers and Highlands. He was a designer of several buildings and floor plans for different purposes. These include several houses built at Wildcat Ridge, the country club there, and his office in Rock Hill, S.C.

Dr. Matthews was survived at the time of his death by his wife and four daughters: Guerry Anne, Sarah Lynn, Beverly Anne, and Patricia, and one granddaughter. He also leaves five brothers and one sister.
