John Freeze was born either in Berks or Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He went with his parents to Frederick County, Maryland, when less than 5 years old, where he grew up. Around 1795, he married Anna Maria Schrupp, daughter of Matthias Schrupp and Maria Barbara McDaniel. They had 8 children and around 1823, having sold property in Frederick County, Maryland in 1822, migrated to Coshocton County, Ohio, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Around the time they moved to Ohio, the spelling of the name changed to "Freese." John and Anna Maria were the parents of 8 children: Sophia, Anna Mary, John Henry, Elizabeth, Eleanora, John, Joseph and William Freese. John passed away December 8, 1837, in Jefferson Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, and was buried in Darling Run Cemetery there.
