Bailey G. Choate
Bailey G. Choate, 87, a longtime Abilene businessman, real estate developer, and philanthropist, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Corpus Christi, Texas where he was attending a Kiwanis Convention.
Born to Ethel Tripplett and Stephen G. Choate on April 5, 1915, in Snyder, Oklahoma, Mr. Choate began his long career in public service with the Chamber of Commerce in Frederick, OK, followed six years later by a position with the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce, which was the last civilian salary he ever drew. He began a wholesale oil and gas business in Tulia, TX , a business he sold before joining the U. S. Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he continued in business with a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Sweetwater, and moved in 1954 to Abilene where he added home building, apartment building, motel operation and ranching to his impressive list of successful business endeavors.
In 1952, Mr. Choate became the first West Texan district governor of Kiwanis for Texas-Oklahoma. He was an avid supporter and promoter of Disability Resources, which provides group homes and sheltered workshop opportunities for the mentally disabled, and Christian Homes of Abilene, which has adopted out countless babies after caring for their unwed pregnant mothers. All three organizations had recognized Mr. Choate for his unselfish contributions. He had been a member of Highland Church of Christ since 1954.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florene Stone Choate, in 1995; his parents; and three brothers, Walter Choate, Hollis Choate, and Lawton Choate.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Choate of Abilene; a daughter, Carla Varner Vincent and husband, Dr. Gerald Vincent, of Abilene; a son, Garland Choate and wife, Susan, of Daytona Beach, Florida; a stepson, Matthew Reed and wife, Kari, of Weatherford, Texas; a stepdaughter, Ann Catherine Wilder of Tucson, Arizona; and seven grand-children, Kenneth Varner, Kelly Varner, Nicholas Choate, Brandon Choate, Jack Flowers, Jennifer Ross Reed, and Daniel Wilder. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack C. Choate and wife, Florence, of Sweetwater, and Cecil Choate and wife, Reta, of Roscoe, and three sisters, Cleo C. Reid of Abilene, Irene Ballard of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Virgie Shankle of San Diego, California.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Church of Christ with Clois Fowler officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
