The earthly remains of Cecil C. Choate and Reta L. Choate of Roscoe were released into the blue waters of the Carribean near St. Thomas, USVI, in a private ceremony attended by their children on Aug. 21, 2010. At their request, no other observances were held. A bronze marker is placed in their honor in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater.
Cecil Carl Choate was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Frederick, Okla., to Stephen and Ethel (Triplett) Choate. He graduated high school in Manitou, Okla. and briefly attended the University of Oklahoma before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941, to train as a pilot and navigator. He served in World War II in both Europe and the Pacific. After WWII, he operated Triple C Motor Company in Sweetwater, but reenlisted to serve in Korea. He retired from the military as a lieutenant colonel in 1964, and then worked in real estate and general building contracting. In 1977, he earned certification in HVAC from Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater and worked in that business until retirement. He died July 19, 2003. He is survived by a sister, Cleo Reid of Abilene, Texas.
Reta Lee Choate was born Sept. 5, 1925, near Clyde, Texas, to J. Hugh and Nora (Crawford) McCormick. She attended school in Highland and Roscoe and was chosen Miss Sweetwater in 1942. She married Fred L. Perryman in 1943. Following his wartime death in December 1944, she worked in the cafe at the Bluebonnet Hotel in Sweetwater and as a telephone operator. She later worked as a hotel bookkeeper and manager, but was always a devoted homemaker to her family. She died March 2, 2010. She is survived by two cousins, Bill Ivey and Roger Ivey and his wife, Rhonda, all of Roscoe.
Cecil and Reta met in Sweetwater and were married in Reno, Nev. in October 1953. While in the military, they lived in many states, but after retirement they returned to Texas and made it their home. They moved to Roscoe in 1975, and lived there the rest of their lives.
Together they are survived by son, Larry Choate and his wife, Jan of St. Thomas, USVI; daughter, Crystal Wood and her husband, George of Denton, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
