Per Nunnelee Funeral Home death records, cited by "Muddy Roots" Mississippi County Genealogical Society, Volume 20, Number 3, September, 2002: Robert resided (and died) at his home on Rt. 4, Dexter (Missouri). This source records his birthdate as 24 Nov 1839 (which conflicts with the tombstone date of 24 Nov 1841).

Robert is the eldest of nine known children (6 males, 3 females) of Henry Vowels, Jr. and Elizabeth Jane (Eliza) Ice (her burial place is unknown). He served as a private in Civil War (Union). His daughter-in-law Ellen's father John O'Regan served in the Confederacy, and descendants recall the two arguing frequently about the war. He married Mary Elizabeth Hutcheson 23 Jan 1866 or 1867, in Mississippi Co., Missouri. He is the father of eight children (5 sons, 3 daughters). Democrat and retired farmer.

Above contributed by memorial creator, his great, great granddaughter by his youngest son, Charles.

Inscription

In Loving Remembrance
Of Our Dear Father

Gone but not forgotten

A precious one from us is gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which (never?) can be filled
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given
And though the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in Heaven.
