Melanie and her son, Louis Constant (One-Eyed) Simon were some of the first Swiss to establish a colony in Kansas. She arrived 2 September 1850 on the ship "St. Nicholas" from Le Havre to New York. Melanie is buried near the homestead by the creek, 1 1/2 miles west of the present Neuchatel Cemetary.
