Pioneer Montana Resident Passes Away Suddenly Here. Alfred LaBarre Called to The Great Beyond at His Fort Benton Home Early Friday Morning
This community was shocked and grieved to learn of the sudden death of a pioneer Chouteau county resident at his home in this city early Friday morning when Alfred "Fred" LaBarre received the final summons to the Great Beyond. Mr. LaBarre was found dead in his bed about 5:30 a.m. by members of his family, death being due to heart trouble and hemorrhage of the brain. He had been in rather poor health for only a few days but the family nor friends had any intimation that the end was near. His passing marks a closing of a career or another Montana pioneer, who knew the early days of Montana as few knew it, and his passing will be mourned by hundreds of friends over the state and especially in Chouteau county where he had been identified with the settlement of this section for more than 56 years, spending all but two years of his time in this county, fifty years of which were spent on his ranch on the Marias river, about 20 miles from Fort Benton.
Alfred LaBarre was born in St. Alexandria, Quebec, Canada, on Aug. 25, 1856, and at the time of his passing was almost 75 years of age. He resided with his parents in Canada until he was 19 years of age, when he came to Montana, locating at Helena where he spent two years. At Helena he was engaged in the freighting business, being in partnership with Mack Bruneau. I 1877 he took up the LaBarre ranch on the Marias but for almost eleven years he continued the freighting business in the summer time, coming out to the ranch to spend the winter months. In 1888 he engaged in the livestock business and the hard winter of 1888-89 came along and swept away all his livestock. He later engaged in both the cattle and sheep business which he continued until 1927 when he moved to Fort Benton. For some time he was employed by John Harris, who was then manager of the Conrad-Circle cattle outfit.
He was married in 1894 to Miss Rose Ana LaRoque at St. Alexandria, Quebec, after which they made an extended visit with relatives in Massachusetts and Connecticut after which they returned to the ranch and continued to reside until 1927 when they moved to Fort Benton, where they have since resided. To this union were born seven children, five daughters and two sons. One daughter, Loretta LaBarre Bade, passed away in Dec. 1928.
Mr. LaBarre is survived by the widow; two sons, Alfred, Jr., and Alderic, both of this city; four daughters, Rina and Jeanette LaBarre and Mrs. Aurore Uptmore, all of this city; and Mrs. George Merrill of Great Falls; six grandchildren; four sisters, two residing in Canada and two in Massachusetts, and one brother, Hilare LaBarre of this city, and a large circle of friends who will mourn the passing of a devoted husband, father, and brother and a loyal friend.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the Catholic church. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery beside the remains of his daughter.
