The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 19 Nov 1952
Pioneer Resident Answers Final Call.
Mrs. Rose Ana LaBarre, a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for more than 58 years, passed away at her home in this city last Thursday following an illness extending over the past 12-1/2 years. She suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1940 and since that time has been an invalid at her home.
Rose Ana LaRocque was born in the town of Richelieu, County Droville, Province of Quebec, Canada, on May 1, 1866. She came to live in the United States as a child, residing in Holyoke, Mass., for a time and later at Waterbury, Conn., where she was employed. She was united in marriage on March 19, 1894, in St. Alexandria, Quebec, Canada, to the late Alfred LaBarre, coming out to Fort Benton to reside on a ranch on the Marias river, which her husband started by homesteading in 1877. They engaged in the cattle business for some time and later in the sheep business and in farming until retiring and moving to this city.
Because of pioneer days, transportation was slow and ranchers far between, and Mrs. LaBarre was known for her hospitality to the cowboys in the early days. Also because the country was sparsely settled those early days, it was about a year after arriving on the Marias before Mrs. LaBarre saw her first white woman who proved to be the late Mrs. Jack Lee, a neighbor living 20 miles away.
In 1927 Mr. and Mrs. LaBarre retired and moved to Fort Benton to make their home. Mr. LaBarre passed away in June 1931, and Mrs. LaBarre continued to reside here with some of her children until her death.
To this union were born seven children, five daughters and two sons, five of whom survive, namely: Mrs. Mabel Rose Merrill of Great Falls; Mrs. Rina Robinson of Lewistown, and Fred, Jeannette and Alderic LaBarre, all of Fort Benton. Two daughters, Mrs. Aurore Uptmor and Mrs. Loretta Bade passed away several years ago. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and a brother-in-law, Hilaire LaBarre of Fort Benton.
