Robert Rufus Wertz was born on October 20, 1891, in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Son of Charles Ambrose Wertz and Margaret Caroline Schenck, he was the brother of Gervaise, Roosevelt William, Edna Mary, Loyola V., Ambrose Charles, Magdalene (Sister M. Georgina, IHM), Grace, and Elizabeth (Mother M. Beata, IHM). He was joined in marriage with Zita Ellen Warmbaugh on October 6, 1913, at St. Thomas Church in Bedford by Rev. William E. Downes. They were the parents of nine children: Hazel, Joseph, Rita, John Aloysius "Jack", Vincent Theodore"Pete", Fred Lewis, Thomas Henry, and Eunice. Robert was a life-long farmer. He died on May 21, 1977 in Bedford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 85, and was buried with his wife in Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Cemetery, Bedford, PA.

Surviving are 10 (sic) children. 19 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren also survive along with two sisters Mr. Wertz was a retired farmer and a member of St, Thomas Catholic Church.
