He was a retired employee of Richmond Gear where he had worked at an inspector and as a machine operator. He was a US Army veteran of World War II where he had served with the 101st Airborne.

A brother, Dick Abney, is also deceased.
Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Wayne County Veterans Council.
