He was born October 5, 1925, the son of the late Journey E. Baker and Virgie Parker Baker of Mt. Crawford, Virginia.
He married Bonnie Desper Hicklin on November 20, 1982.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Juanita Baber Pirky and Nellie Baber Losh.
Survivors include a brother, John D. Baker of Bridgewater; two sisters, Ruby Jean Baker of Richmond, Ruth Irene Baker of Franklin, Virginia; a daughter: Beverly Baker Short of Waynesboro; a son, Steven Niel Baker of Staton Island, New York; stepsons, Don A. Hicklin of Stuarts Draft, Terry A. Hicklin of Jonesboro, Tennessee and Jeffrey S.Hicklin of Williamsburg; grandsons, Steven W. Short and Nichlos Short of Waynesboro; step grandchildren, Hailey Marie Hicklin and Michael A. Hicklin.
Mr. Baker served in the United States Air Force from the late 1944 until 1947. He was honorably discharged and enlisted in the Reserves until 1973 and was discharged as a Honorary Retired Reservist. He was mainly a teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal in Augusta County Schools and Valley Vocational Tech Center. He also worked in the construction field for a number of years.
A graveside service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Stuarts Draft by the Reverend Walter B. Failes Jr.
