Juanita Margaret Baker Pirkey , 85, widow of Merle T. Pirkey and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004. Survived by daughter, Barbara P. Sprouse and husband, Roger, of Staunton, Va.; son, John Ernest Pirkey and wife, Van, of Verona, Va.; granddaughters, Kristie M. Saunders and husband, Gordon, of Richmond, Va., Elizabeth P. Sprouse of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandsons, John E. Pirkey Jr. and wife, Dena, James P. Pirkey and wife, Lisa, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-granddaughter, Gillian P. Saunders, Richmond, Va. She leaves brothers, Jacob E. Baker and wife, Bonnie, of Stuarts Draft, Va., and John D. Baker and wife, Mary, of Bridgewater, Va.; sisters, Ruby J. Baker, Richmond, Va., and Ruth I. Baker, Franklin, Va.; many nieces and nephews.

Juanita was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Rockingham County, Va., married Merle T. Pirkey Oct. 4, 1939, and resided near Waynesboro, Va. 64 years. She had been a resident at Westport Health Care Center in Richmond for 2½ years.

During her working years, she was manager of the Fishersville Elementary School Cafeteria for 40 years.

She was a devoted member of the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Fishersville, Va., and loved to organize their many social functions. She was a longtime member of the Homebuilders Sunday School Class, past president and honorary member of the Women of the Church. Juanita was a deacon for five years and elder emeritus. She also served as president of Fishersville Senior Citizens.

She leaves a legacy of faith, love for family and friends, hard work, and service to others. She will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Va. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Fishersville, Va. with the Rev. Jason Whitener and Rev. Kip Caldwell officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Crawford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorials to the Activity Department, c/o Kristi Prete, Westport Health Care Center, 7300 Forest Ave., Richmond, VA 23226, or Students Scholarship Fund, Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Fishersville, VA 22939.
