Hank was a child born to Obera (Moore) and Charles Calhoun. Born in N.Y., his family (including 90 year old grandpa, Jared) relocated to Iowa in 1870 to farm and raise sheep. His Mom died when they got to Iowa and his Dad remarried Alma. He lived with an Aunt for a while and at age 14 left Iowa and headed WEST. He spent his first winter in South Dakota working on a ranch for Teddy Rosevelt. He "cowboyed" on several ranches and collected several life long friends, ending up in Montana. One of the Montana Ranches was The XIT, which had been the USA's largest cattle outfit, with 3 million acres in Texas and 1 million acres in Montana. In 1890, the XIT trailed a herd of Texas longhorns from their holdings in Texas to the XIT finishing range north of the Yellowstone River in Eastern Montana.

The lack of rear cinch on their cowboy saddles was normal, and It would be years before Montana cowboys used breast collars.

Hank left cowboying on ranches and settled in Columbus. There he met and married Mary Lavelle on Dec 15 1892 at the Lavelle Hotel. (The Marriage Cert. shows married in the state of Montana, county of Yellowstone, city of Stillwater ~ later changed to Columbus, Stillwater Co.)

They settled in Columbus and started a Livery Stable with his brother in law W P Adams. He also raised cattle.

He and Mary had 5 children;

Cecilia Francis 1893 - 1900
John Clarence 1895 - 1969
Bernard Patrick 1897 - 1963
Francis Henry 1906 - 1973
Ruth Lavelle 1908 - 1949

He held several offices including Justice of the Peace. He loved the new "cars" and when stables were no longer needed he opened "the American Garage" with his son John selling tires and accessories and doing maintence on cars.
