Baxter, John R. - March 28 in Redding. Husband of Florence D. Baxter of Central Valley. Brother of Mrs. Flossie Bailey of Fortuna, Ray Baxter of Rio Del. Uncle of Harvey Bailey of Fortuna, Riley Baxter of Hydesville, Warren Baxter of Hayward, Clay Baxter of Prescott, Arizona, Mrs. Charles Babbs of Klamath, Mrs. Martha Harris of Houston, Texas. He is survived by numerous cousins, great nephews, and great nieces.
A graduate of Fortuna High School and also attended Humboldt State College. He had been employed by the Pacific Lumber Company in Freshwater for several years and boxed in this area under the late Dan Coakley.
He had toured with Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champion of the world. In exhibition matches, a native of Hydesville. Age 58.
Graveside services will be held March 31, at 10:30 a.m. In Redding.
