Son of John White and Sally Gambell.

James Taylor White, known as Taylor, was a cattleman and rancher. By 1840 he owned 4,605 acres of land and 1,775 head of cattle and 45 horses. He was eventually known as "The Cattle King" of southeast Texas.

He married to Sarah Cade on January 26, 1813 and together they parented 7 children; Elizabeth, John, Permelia Jane, Robert, James Taylor Jr, Joseph and Sarah.

James Taylor died of cholera 9 days before his wife died in the same epidemic.
