He passed away at his residence in Grayville, Illinois. Before this, he had been a patient at Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri for a heart condition.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dean; a sister, Bernice Alldredge, and a half-sister Lura Harrington.

Horste had been associated with the family's Horste Meat Market in downtown Grayville for many years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the James M. Helm American Post #696, and the Grayville Moose Lodge. He also worked for the Chrysler Corporation retiring on May 31, 1977 after 23 dedicated years of service.

Graveside services for Derral Horste were held on April 10, 1986 at Oak Grove Cemetery with Rev. C. Douglas Rorex officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Helm Post drill team. He is buried on the edge of the cemetery next to his farm.
